The Delta lies adjacent to the historical city centre of Rijeka and comprises a total area of 32 ha. Its development into a new urban district and city park represents a historic opportunity to reconnect with the water edge of the adriatic sea. The masterplan is driven by two movements, which are overlaid and interlaced with one another on the delta. One is the urban grid linking the city areas east and west of the delta; the other one is the natural landscape meandering through the hinterland canyon towards the sea and ending as a partly natural, partly man-made delta landform. Water has been chosen as a central theme for the landscape concept. Not only for the site’s location which is surrounded by water, but also for its history as a delta and its relevance as a valuable resource represented by the Waste Water Treatment Plant’s prominent location at the edge of delta and sea.
